True Colors is the tenth episode of Season 3 of That's So Raven. It originally aired on Disney Channel on February 4, 2005.

Plot[]

Raven and Chelsea both apply for a job at Sassy's. Raven does very well on her interview while Chelsea (though) is terrible at it. However, Chelsea gets the job and Raven doesn't. Raven can't imagine why she didn't, but then has a vision of Chloe Hunter (the store manager) saying that she doesn't hire black people, showing her true nature and persona as a bigot. After telling her friends about her vision, Eddie reveals how he notices that Sassy's is lacking in any employees of color.

Raven tells her parents about it, but feels that there's nothing that she can do. With her parents' encouragement, the trio enlist the help with local television reporter, Yolanda Johnson, who agrees to help them to expose Chloe's discriminatory policies. Chelsea reports to work with a hidden camera in her hat. A disguised Raven and Eddie help her record the evidence that they need. Chloe is later exposed in a television broadcast report and fired.

Meanwhile, Cory learns the contributions of African-Americans in life, and gets the inspiration he needs to write a report about a famous African-American for Black History Month. He reveals that he picked Augustus Jackson, the inventor of modern ice cream.

Trivia/Goofs[]

  • The episode title is based off a song by Cyndi Lauper. Ironically, Lauper guest starred in Art Breaker.
  • Raven's parents said Harriet Tubman invented the Underground Railroad, but she didn't.
  • When Chloe tells Chelsea that she doesn't hire black people, she's looking right at us meaning she's looking at the camera, which is in Chelsea's hat. Her eyes should be looking a bit below us, where Chelsea's eyes would be.
  • Raven-Symone's dad, Christopher B. Pearman, directed the episode.
  • This episode was aired during Black History Month.
  • This episode was inspired from The WB sitcom Smart Guy episode "Get a Job", as both episodes were aired in Season 3.
  • This and There Goes the Bride and are arguably the darkest and most serious episodes in the entire That's So Raven franchise to date.

Famous Black Figures Introduced and Mentioned[]

Within Cory's dream, he is introduced to many different black figures within his dream which eventually gives him the encouragement and drive to write his report after previously complaining about how hard the whole thing was among other average complaints that a young teenager would make to the point in his first "report", he tried to reach the 500 words by using a bunch of unnecessary filler words to the point Victor told him straight that he had to write a real report and that he wasn't appreciating black history and how far they have come. The figures and what they're known for are as follows.

  • Frederick Douglass - Slavery abolitionist
  • Bessie Coleman - First black or white woman to earn an international pilot's license.
  • Scott Joplin - Ragtime artist known for The Entertainer and Maple Leaf Rag.
  • Garrett Morgan (mentioned only) - Inventor of a type of traffic light.
  • Harriet Tubman - Contributor with the Underground Railroad.
  • Jackie Robinson - Broke the baseball color barrier.
  • Thurgood Marshall - First black Supreme Court Justice and founder of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
  • Sijournar Truth - Human rights activist with Woman's Suffrage.
  • Madam C.J. Walker - First woman black or white to earn $1 million.
  • Althea Gibson - Tennis player and champion
  • Marcus Garvey - Political Activist
  • Mary Mcleod Bethune - Educator and Civil Rights Activist

  • Augustus Sam Jackson (Mentioned only and subject of Cory's report) - Ice Cream Maker and Confectioner, chef in the white house (ironically, a job Victor would later aquire)

Quotes[]

Tanya: Oh-whoa-whoa-whoa, now wait a minute. I didn't say "Give up."
Raven: Mom, even if they did believe me, I'm just one person. I can't change the world.
Victor: Raven, if Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. had that same attitude, we’d still be sitting in the back of the bus.
